Gender Studies Concentration

Introduction

The Gender Studies Concentration, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, aims to provide a unique opportunity for students to add breadth to their major studies. Students will examine how gender intersects with culture, identities, relationships, and social institutions across diverse contexts, developing critical thinking and analytical skills.

Target Students

HKBU undergraduate students from ALL majors.

Study Goals

After completing the Gender Studies Concentration, you will be able to:

• Analyse in a systematic manner the social and cultural construction of gender in our own and other contexts from a variety of disciplinary perspectives;
• Explain gender biases in society, knowledge, media, social justice, and everyday life;
• Research on gender issues as they intersect with the hierarchies of class, ethnicity, sexuality, and with national and global formations, etc.

The programme equips students with the ability to:

• Think across disciplines: The programme adds a powerful interdisciplinary perspective to your major. Study gender through sociology, cultural studies, social work, history, media, arts, and languages.
• Understand today’s world: From workplace equality and media representation to social justice and global diversity, gender analysis helps you make sense of key issues shaping contemporary societies.
• Build skills for future career: Develop critical thinking and research skills valued in fields such as business, public policy, NGOs, media, education, and international organizations.
   

Graduates will be well prepared for careers in multinational corporations, government and public administration, non-governmental organisations, education, law, media and communications, culture and creative industries, finance, tourism, and other professions where critical thinking, diversity, and analytical skills are valued.

The programme also provides a strong foundation for students who plan to pursue postgraduate studies across the humanities and social sciences, including linguistics, literature, cultural studies, history, philosophy, translation, education, law, sociology, and social work.
