We are pleased to announce that Dr. Kwong Chi Man, Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of History, Associate Director of the Academy of Chinese, History, Religion, and Philosophy (CHRP), has recently been awarded a grant of 2,449,720 HKD from the Lantau Conservation Fund (LCF) for his research project titled “The Military History of Lantau Island from the Early Modern Period to the Early Cold War: A Spatial History Project (1600-1960).”
This project approaches the military history of Lantau Island from the Early Modern Period to the mid-20th century from a spatial history perspective and establishes a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform for the conservation of Lantau Island's historical and cultural heritage. The research team will examine the military establishments during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the changes in defense during the early period of British rule, the activities of the Japanese military and the guerrilla resistance movements during the Japanese occupation (December 1941 to August 1945), as well as post-war security arrangements. The team will use GIS to synthesize, organize, analyze, and visually present historical maps, aerial photographs, and other spatial information related to the military history of Lantau Island.
Established in 2018, the LCF supports projects that contribute to Lantau's conservation efforts, raise community awareness, and engage the community to put conservation into practice, with a view to fostering a quality living environment for the current generation and beyond.
Congratulations to Dr. Kwong on this recognition. We look forward to the significant contributions his research will make to the military history of Lantau Island, spatial history, and related fields.
