The Plaque Unveiling Ceremony for the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Base (Zhuhai) and the accompanying Academic Symposium were held on 22 May 2026 at Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) in Zhuhai. Jointly organized by HKBU’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), the Chinese Institute of Hong Kong (CIHK) of the China Academy of Social Sciences, and BNBU’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS), the event brought together more than 100 participants for the unveiling, which was followed by a symposium on “Artificial Intelligence and its Impact on the Social, Cultural, and Governance Development of the Greater Bay Area.”
Established under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between HKBU and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on 16 November 2023, the Zhuhai Research Base is the second platform of its kind in the Greater Bay Area, following the Shenzhen base unveiled on 15 March 2025. It aims to promote cross-border collaboration through joint research projects, faculty exchanges, and postgraduate partnerships.
The symposium featured keynote addresses by Professor Huang Ping, President of CIHK; Professor Sun Jiuxia, Director of the Center for Tourism, Leisure and Social Development Research at Sun Yat-sen University and Executive Director of the Key Laboratory of the Greater Bay Area Humanistic Community in China; and Professor He Baogang from Deakin University’s Faculty of Arts and Education and School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
In the afternoon, a paper presentation competition showcased the work of taught postgraduate and research postgraduate students. From more than 50 submissions across the region, five finalists were selected through a rigorous review process to present their papers. Three Best Paper Awards were presented, with one going to each of the winners from HKBU, BNBU, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences University.
To highlight these achievements and the event’s significance, Guangdong Radio and Television provided on-site coverage, with a 17:00 news segment airing on its Economic & Science Channel (Focus on Southern Guangdong) on the day of the event. Additional media coverage appeared on platforms including CCTV Video, Yue TV, Chao News, Today’s Headlines, and Sohu.
