The Making of New Citizens – Urbanisation, Governance, and Local State-building in China Seminar

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) was delighted to host a seminar titled “The Making of New Citizens: Urbanisation, Governance, and Local State-building in China” on 10 February 2026. The seminar was led by Professor Beibei Tang, Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) and Honorary Professor at the China Studies Centre, University of Sydney.

Professor Daniel Lai, Dean of FASS, joined the seminar and delivered an opening speech. Professor Lai’s remarks highlighted the importance of scholarly exchange in understanding rapid societal changes.

Professor Tang shared insights on urbanization, local governance, and her qualitative research in China. The seminar offered a comprehensive view of how local governance initiatives blend economic, political, and social changes to enhance the coherence of local state-building processes. Staff and students at FASS actively engaged in the seminar and are eager to explore future collaborations with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at BNBU.
