Yann Martel, Booker Prize recipient and renowned Canadian novelist and author of the international best-seller Life of Pi, was welcomed to HKBU for the International Writers’ Workshop (IWW) 2024 Distinguished Writers Series on 21 and 22 October. Founded in 2004 with a mission to promote literary and cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and the world, the IWW is one of the signature programmes of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The IWW was honoured to receive funding support from the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong, which greatly contributed to the success of hosting Mr Martel for the Distinguished Writers Series.

Literary Reading & Conversation (21 October)

After the opening remarks by Professor Daniel Lai, Dean of Arts and Social Sciences, Mr James Shea, Associate Professor of the Academy of Language and Culture and Acting Director of the IWW, introduced Mr Martel. Following a literary reading by Mr Martel, Dr Patrick Holland, Assistant Professor of the Academy of Language and Culture, engaged Mr Martel in a candid and insightful sharing about Life of Pi, his writing and life philosophy, the sense of wonder, and how to overcome writer’s block.

Masterclass (22 October)

The IWW partnered with Eaton HK to organize Mr Yann Martel's Masterclass titled "The Writing Life – Yours, Mine", which was open exclusively to HKBU students and ethnic minorities invited by Eaton, in the hope of promoting diversity and inclusion. Participants were delighted to have the opportunity to engage closely with Mr Martel and learn more about his writing journey.
