Hong Kong Baptist University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Collaborates with Top Overseas Universities to Host the International Doctoral Symposium

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) collaborated with five top-tier overseas universities hosted a “International Doctoral Symposium 2025: Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy and Practice” on 10th to 14th March 2025. This symposium aimed at gathering outstanding young scholars from various fields in arts and social sciences to discuss the impact of globalization on social issues and policies.

Founded by the HKBU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in collaboration with The University of Chicago, The University of Michigan, Seoul National University, The University of British Columbia, and Nanyang Technological University, the International Doctoral Symposium is dedicated to bringing together PhD students from high-ranking universities each year. The symposium provides a platform for students and partner universities to present their research, engage in enlightening discussions, consolidate networks with international scholars, and develop innovative solutions to social problems. Key topics of the discussion included migration and displacement, urban poverty, family dynamics, health and well-being, and social innovation.

Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) of HKBU delivered the opening speech at the symposium. He emphasized, “As we navigate the Age of AI, we recognize the abundant opportunities and the necessity for transdisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences. HKBU is committed to participating in this vital transdisciplinary research to create a meaningful and lasting impact.”

He further noted, “Today’s symposium showcases Hong Kong as an important “International Education Hub” for global and regional talents and the ability to coacervate elite universities worldwide. We appreciate the expertise and skill that our doctoral students and professors from different parts of the world bring to HKBU.”

The symposium commenced on March 10, 2025, and attracted nearly a hundred doctoral students who participated in the opening ceremony.
