From May 27 to May 29, 2025, a delegation of 30 postgraduate students and academics from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) participated in the HKBU-UoM Postgraduate Research Workshop on Contemporary China Studies, held at the University of Melbourne (UoM). This workshop was organized by the David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies (LEWI) at HKBU and the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies (CCCS) at UoM, providing an exciting platform for our students to exchange research ideas, engage in academic dialogue, and establish scholarly networks across borders.
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from Professor Mark Wang (UoM) and Associate Professor Kevin Lo (HKBU), highlighting the importance of international academic collaboration in the field of China studies. The three-day programme featured a range of activities, including expert panels, paper presentations, networking lunches and dinners, campus tours, and a scenic excursion along the iconic Yarra River.
Our HKBU students delivered high-quality presentations on their ongoing research and received valuable feedback from peers and faculty members. Participants praised the workshop’s inclusive atmosphere, stimulating discussions, and its role in deepening and broadening their perspectives on contemporary China. The workshop also fostered lasting connections between HKBU and UoM. Both institutions expressed strong interest in continuing this collaboration through future joint workshops, co-supervision opportunities, and expanded research partnerships.
