The Academy of Chinese, History, Religion, and Philosophy (CHRP) at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences launched the Digital Humanities Workshop Series on 13 February 2025. The workshop “Research in Spatial Humanities: the Japanese Occupation as an Example” was led by Dr. Chi-man Kwong, Associate Director of CHRP, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of History.
Dr. Kwong introduced the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in humanities research by sharing his research project, “Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong,” with faculty members and students. He demonstrated how researchers examine and visualize various kinds of data, such as historical maps, aerial photos, and quantitative data from documents, using GIS technology. Dr. Kwong integrated AI into database construction, allowing data to be processed effectively. The user-friendly database serves as an important tool for spatial analysis and teaching. He also shared challenges he faced, such as data limitations and technical requirements, providing participants with a deeper understanding of the tool.
The CHRP Digital Humanities Workshop Series aims to explore methodologies in humanities research and provide scholars and students with new perspectives for academic inquiry. Please stay tuned for upcoming workshops!
