An academic symposium and public talk featuring Professor Luciano Floridi, John K. Castle Professor in the Practice of Cognitive Science, Yale University, have been successfully held on 28 and 29 April 2026. The two events were jointly organised by the Department of Religion and Philosophy and the Centre for Applied Ethics of the Academy of Chinese, History, Religion and Philosophy, and brought together scholars, students, and members of the University community to explore the rapidly evolving impact of artificial intelligence on the humanities, social sciences, ethics, and society.
The academic symposium, “AI x Humanities and Social Sciences: New Questions, Opportunities, Challenges, and Methods,” was held on 28 April and attracted more than 90 participants. The programme featured a keynote lecture by Professor Floridi, followed by presentations by HKBU scholars and a panel discussion on topics such as AI-supported humanities research, AI and artistic authorship, and the use of large language models in local language contexts.
The public talk, “The Post-AI Society: Power, Agency, and the Shape of the Future,” was held on 29 April and drew more than 200 attendees. The event was honoured by welcome remarks from Ms Joyce Liu, Head of the Global Affairs and Research Division, Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, before Professor Floridi delivered his keynote address. A fireside chat and audience discussion further deepened the exchange on AI, power, responsibility, and the future of human agency.
Both events were well received and reflected HKBU’s commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue, public scholarship, and critical engagement with emerging technologies.
