Full Time (5 full days / 40 hours per week) / Part Time (2 full days / 16 hours per week)

Target Students

Undergraduate students of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences 

Earning Credit Units

Students will be enrolled in one of the following 3-unit courses in Semester 1, AY2025-26:

  • Social Sciences Experiential Learning in Action
    (SOSC3005 Community and Civic Engagement) *
  • GE Capstone (GCAP3145 Community and Civic Engagement) *
  • Free Elective (SOSC1005 Internship I / SOSC2005 Internship II)

* Students of Year 3 standing or above in AY2025/26 only

Internship & Research Attachment Opportunities

Apart from the internship opportunities provided by our partner organisations, student research attachment opportunities offered by Departments/Centres in HKBU will be available too!
Students can choose to work in government offices, NGOs, social enterprises, policy-related offices, arts or cultural conservation organisations, media and publishers, research centres, or participating in research projects, etc.

What is SSI?

Social Sciences Internship (SSI) is a structured programme developed and supervised by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in collaboration with Partner Organisations, to provide various off-campus learning opportunities for all Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate students.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship course, students should be able to:

CILO 1Acquire substantive and detailed knowledge and understanding in the community and workplace.
CILO 2Identify core values, principles and functioning processes of management and operation of the assigned organisation.
CILO 3Recognise and practise the job required transferable skills.
CILO 4Work effectively in a team and independently.

Duration & Work Hour Requirement

At least 5 consecutive weeks and a minimum of 200 work hours per internship period.

No Employment Relationship

Given the training and educational nature of the internship, there is no employer-employee relationship between the Partner Organisation and the Student Intern. The Statutory Minimum Wage (SMW) and Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) do not apply to the students with no employment relationship with the host organisation or company.

Remuneration

Remuneration depends on each placement opportunity. Information regarding allowance/ remuneration would be given in each placement details at the application stage.

Supervision

Each student intern would be assigned with a Faculty supervisor (an academic staff assigned by the student’s Department) and an On-site Supervisor (assigned by the Partner Organisation).

Programme Schedule

* Students who carry a study load over 15 units (excluding the 3 units to be obtained in SSI) are NOT recommended to undertake the internship in that semester unless an approval is obtained from your respective major Department before the start of your internship.

Internship Nature

Given the training and educational nature of the internship, there is no employment relationship between the Partner Organisation and the Student Intern. Student Interns will be enrolled in a 3-unit Free Elective course (in Pass/Fail grade).

The Statutory Minimum Wage (SMW) and Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) do not apply to the students with no employment relationship with the host organisation or company. If an employment relationship has been established by the organisation, a student internship will be exempted from the SMW. However, the organisation is required to contribute to the student intern’s MPF if a consecutive employment period of not less than 60 calendar days is established.

Remuneration

We are grateful if partner organisations could provide meal and transportation allowance for Student Interns as financial support if the internship is not paid. Any information regarding allowance should be given at the time of Job Posting.

Supervision

An On-site Supervisor should be assigned by partner organisation to:

  • Brief and supervise the student intern during the internship.
  • Endorse the student intern’s Monthly Attendance Log Records and leave application, and 
  • Assess the student intern’s performance and complete the Internship Appraisal Report at the end of the internship.
Internship Agreement

Internship Agreement will be signed between the University and the Organisation before the start of the internship. Letter for confirmation of "student intern" status under Minimum Wage Ordinance (Cap. 608) (MWO) will be provided to the Partner Organisation upon request. 

Any special arrangement should be communicated with the University in advance, and it must be mutually communicated and agreed among the University, the Organisation and the Student Intern.
